Nicholas Bussmann is a conceptual artist and composer. He lives and works in Berlin. Originally an improvisational cellist, he expanded his musical practice and experience to a wide range of musical genres from electronics to conceptual art. He mixes traditional compositions with club music production techniques and conceptual art. It also permeates pop structures through random electronics algorithms and thus produces its abstract derivatives that require high musical versatility during performance. He performs under various nicknames and pseudonyms. He is the founder of the vocal choir Cottbusser, the duo Telebossa with Chick Mel and Rydberg with Berner Defaldecker. Neff's discography includes 16 music editions, and he presented his works at the Shanghai Biennale, Maertzmusic (Berlin), Mutek Festival (Barcelona), Ars Electronica Center (Linz), etc. He has collaborated with musicians such as John Zorn, Van Dyke Parks, Martin Brandlmeier, Butch Morris and others. He also occasionally works as a composer for films and theater plays. He is the founder of the love song competition Grand Prix d’Amour in Berlin.

As part of the residency, Bussmann will lead a performance workshop entitled “A Language is a dialect with an army and navy” with local performers of different languages and dialects. The whole process stems from Bussmann's musical and social experiment "News blues", in which algorithmic composing means are used, and in which different expressive contents are processed, imitated, harmonized, not understood, transformed into a polyphony of voices of performers of different languages and dialects. This process questions the relationship between music and language, meaning and nonsense, the causes of exclusion and integration, the production of consensus and attitudes.

The results of the workshop will be presented by a public appearance of a group of participants. Apart from them, Nicholas Bussmann will also perform as part of the DJ set.

The event is scheduled for June 2, 2017, starting at 9 pm at the Youth Center CK13.

Nicholas Bussmann's guest appearance is realized within the project New in Popular Music, which questions the relationship between contemporary and new popular music. Although popular music may have commercial potential to the detriment of the quality of musical expression, innovation, and participation, it, in turn, exudes autonomous tendencies in musical creativity. Taking into account this ambiguity, the project seeks to mark progressive tendencies in contemporary music by hosting composers and musicians who are active at the crossroads of contemporary popular and so-called. serious music. By implementing these tendencies through performances, workshops, and talks, we want to open new spaces of music research and production, and to encourage actualization and contextualization through re-examining the current situation on the local music scene.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Youth Center CK13 and the New Media Center kuda.org.

The project is supported by the City Administration for Culture of Novi Sad.
