A new book has arrived at the kuda.org library - Rab-Rab Press published the second edition of Free Jazz Communism, a book that re-actualizes the performance of the Archie Shepp - Bill Dixon Quartet at the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki in 1962. . The book combines archival material and documents, commissioned theoretical and historical texts and interviews. The editors of the book, Sezgin Boynik and Taneli Viitahuhta, skillfully contextualize the politics of Free Jazz in the light of global decolonization movements, anti-war activism, racial capitalism, and new forms of avant-garde music.
Focusing on the concerts of the Shepp-Dixon Quartet, then leading avant-garde jazz musicians from the United States, at the Socialist Anti-Colonial Festival in Helsinki, the book introduces complexity into the usual Cold War stories of the 1960s and jazz politics as something beyond national borders and the capitalist market. .
This book complements the historical context and spontaneously contributes significantly to the programs developed by kuda.org 'noism' and 'lost & found' through which analysis and new music production initiates the questioning of collective creativity and the politics of improvisation.
In addition to a theoretical and historical overview, the book includes testimonies of the collective and international spirit of the 1962 Youth Festival, translated documents from Finnish newspapers of the time, a new interview with Archie Shepp, Jeff Schwartz's text on the political engagement of free jazz musicians and a reprint of three hard-to-reach Shepp texts.
The book was designed by Ott Kagovere. That's 168 + 32 pages.
