Society on the Move - New Social Movements in Yugoslavia from 1968 to the Present

Proceedings of the conference "1968 and new social movements in Yugoslavia" held on June 12-14, 2009 in Novi Sad (Cinema Hall MSUV)

Until a few years ago, the disintegration of Yugoslavia was interpreted in the countries created as a result of that process mainly as a necessity, which was conditioned by the alleged "centuries-old hatred" of different peoples in this area. The theses arising from this, unfortunately very influential, discursive shift, to this day influence the interpretation of the situation in Yugoslav society during the existence of the Yugoslav state. Moreover, scientific depictions of social transformation in the post-Yugoslav period were often placed in the context of (new) national (or pre-nationalist) political and historical projects. Yugoslavia and everything in general that reminded or could remind of the Yugoslav state or society was consciously silenced.

If the socialist Yugoslav state really did not have any real social legitimacy, the question arises how to explain the existence of numerous attempts to change the situation in that society, which were articulated by social movements during this entire period, without referring to the so-called national interests. Starting with the movement from 1968, as the first mass movement of the social movement, independently initiated and directed by the official political centers, the question of the direction of the future development of Yugoslav society was increasingly raised. In doing so, therefore, the so-called. the national problem did not play a significant role, since, according to the beliefs of most contemporaries, the central issue in Yugoslav society at the time was not a national but a social issue.

The diversity of social movements, which, despite a clear critique of various problems, sought their solution mainly in that Yugoslav context, has so far not met with much interest in scientific research or in the general public in the former Yugoslavia. Part of these (new) social movements, above all the more important ones, are the subject of this collection.
