Lumpen Station
Radio should have been dead for decades — yet it remains alive. In 2024, the medium celebrated its first century of existence. Paradoxically, it was when radio was declared obsolete with the rise of the internet that it found new life. Originally a state-controlled medium, radio opened up in the 1980s with pirate and free stations, and later entered the hands of anyone who wished to use it thanks to the development of the web. Today, it is easy to create an online radio, build a community, and host creative content. Radio is now experiencing a second life within artistic and cultural spaces.
Its inclusive nature — and the fact that it is not gaze-oriented — allows diverse communities to gather, connect, and become more than mere users. Radio brings people together and fosters collective expression through all kinds of events and experiments.
Lumpen Station, founded in 2019 in Biel/Bienne (CH), is part of this living history. Conceived as a “sound extension of an art space,” it has operated nomadically since 2021. The presentation will share a series of experiences and strategies for making radio — from building a project and navigating between institutional and underground contexts, to maintaining a free spirit and hosting what we like to call “UNdisciplinary practices.”
